3 Sustainable Swaps to make this New Year

January 1st is a day of new beginnings. Goals are set, promises are made to one another, dreams are made. For some, their goal is to live a more sustainable lifestyle, starting in 2020. If this is your goal, koodos to you! I am here to help. To kick-start your journey, here are 3 sustainable swaps to make this New Year in your everyday life. They are easy to do, affordable, and best of all, one small action makes a huge impact!

1. Ditch the plastic water bottles

It’s 2020 and we are still using plastic water bottles. Despite all the information about microplastics, BPA, neighbourhood protests for disrupting local aquifers and ocean pollution, they are still a go-to item for many due to “convenience.” Having carried my own reusable water bottle since I was a child and completely ditching single-use ones since university, I know first-hand that a reusable bottle is just as easy and convenient as any other. Not only that, but it will save you money in the long run (no more buying plastic bottles) and you can find one that represents your personal style.

2. Eat more plant-based meals

I have discussed the benefits of eating more plant-based meals on the blog numerous times (1, 2, 3, 4). It may not be realistic for every person to eat a healthy plant-based diet, which is absolutely fine. Eating one more plant-based meal a week, though, is definitely doable by all. Something as simple as pasta with a great veggie-filled tomato sauce and beans for protein,  a grain bowl or a soup are easy to make yet can be completely plant-based.  You will again save money by reducing the amount of costly meat you are buying, while doing a favour for the planet.

3. Buy clothing second-hand

Thrifting is becoming ever-the-more popular, and for good reason. From saving money on good quality clothing, to finding vintage items you can’t find anywhere else, to reducing your ecological impact through your fashion choices, what’s not to like?

These are 3 sustainable swaps to make in the New Year that you may already be doing. If you are already doing these, or want more ideas, check out these posts:

Every action we take creates an impact. One less water bottle will end up in the ocean when you switch to a resuable bottle; fewer emissions will be released when you eat a meatless dinner tonight; stopping your shopping at fast-fashion stores contributes to environmental, economic and social sustainabaility. Your actions may inspire others to take action too, creating a ripple effect.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to start taking action.

Until next time!
